Kyler Murray finally breaks silence on why he deleted the Cardinals from his Instagram and other social media

Kyler Murray raised some eyebrows around the NFL in early February when he decided to make some major modifications to his social media pages. Not only did he unfollow the Cardinals on Twitter, but he also deleted all his team-related photos from his personal Instagram account. 

Although Murray would later restore the deleted photos, he still hasn’t explained why he deleted them in the first place and that’s mostly because he hasn’t really been available for any interviews over the past six weeks. Well, that changed on Thursday when Murray finally was willing to answer some questions about his social media activities during a press conference at a charity event (The quarterback did release a vague statement on Feb. 14, but he didn’t really offer any explanation for his actions). 

So why did he scrub the Cardinals from his social media account? The two-time Pro Bowler didn’t have a great explanation. 

“If you’re a kid my age, you’re used to like people take off all of their… that’s just a thing,” Murray said, via Mark McCune of CBS 5 in Arizona. “Honestly, like I said, I took everything off of it, besides one picture, so it had nothing to do with the Cardinals or anything like that.”

Murray might try to insist that it had nothing to do with the Cardinals, but his actions over the past six weeks would seem to indicate otherwise. Back on February 28, Murray’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, sent out a lengthy statement that called on the Cardinals to give the quarterback an extension. The statement also called on the team to show that they’re serious about winning a Super Bowl. 

That statement came more than a month ago and the two sides still haven’t worked out a deal. Despite the fact that Murray is still on his rookie contract, the quarterback says that he’s happy where he’s at. 

“Obviously, you’ve got the whole social media stuff and then coming out with whatever it is about the future and stuff like that,” Murray said. “Honestly, I’m happy where I’m at. I’m just being where my feet are and keeping football the main thing, like I always have.”

Murray might be saying the right things publicly, but his agent continues to call out the Cardinals. For instance, after Davante Adams was traded to the Raiders, Burkhardt insinuated that maybe the Cardinals weren’t trying to win as much as some other teams in the NFL.   

The good news for the Cards is that Murray seems content in Arizona, at least for right now. 

“I’m an Arizona Cardinal,” Murray said. “I’ve done nothing but give my all to the Cardinals and will continue to do that, so I’m not really too worried about my future as a Cardinal.”

CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported on Monday that nothing has been resolved between Murray and the Cardinals and it won’t be until the quarterback gets a new contract. If Arizona doesn’t want to give him a new deal right now — Murray still has two years left on his rookie contract — then things could go south quickly in the desert.
